Fine old HOPF violin around late 1800.

Nicely carved scroll and accurately inlaid purfling. This violin from the famous Hopf ateliers in Klingenthal, Saxony, is an outstanding antique instrument with a wonderful sound that is superior to many other violins sharing the same provenance. The unmistakeable model with the well-known HOPF stamp on the back features the typical "angular" contours, opulently executed edges and a light brown varnish over a light ground. The scroll is full of character and clearly inspired by italian patterns, the purfling is crafted with great care by an experienced violin maker. Remarkable is the asymmetric construction: the lower block and center of the lower ribs are moved slightly to the right, which  gives more volume to the bass side and more projection impact onto the treble side. The ebony fingerboard was renewed and wedged onto the old baroque neck. It was completely worked over by our luthier, who applied a new ebony setup, and is offered in immediate playing condition, unfolding its exceptionally beautiful, mature sound full of warmth and light facettes, sophisticated and colorful, precise and strong. This beautiful violin shows no open cracks or open seams, and surely some minor marks in it´s old amber varnish due to its age. The table is very fine grained spruce and the 1-piece back, as well as ribs and neck, is nicely flamed maple. This authentical German violin is a remarkable copy of the great Italian master Joseph Guarnerius, a highly recommendable antique instrument that was built around 1920s. The instrument offered here is definitely superior to most of its siblings, due to its exceptional quality craftsmanship and its rare, great sound. The fine purfling extends well into the corners and is the clear work of a talented and experienced violin maker, who chose exquisite tonewoods and decorated them with a traditional, tastefully applied red-brown colored varnish over a golden ground. The highly recommendable sound of this violin is bright and strong, with an immediate response, dominating, large and precise, very suitable for ambitious musicians. Masterly carved scroll and accurately inlaid purfling. This beautiful violin shows no open cracks or open seams, but surely some minor marks in it´s old varnish. The table is medium to finely grained spruce and the 1-piece back, as well as ribs and neck, is maple. All pegholes have been bushed. Like always the violin has been checked by our luthiers and by our violin player on playability. In our workshop it received new set-up with new ebony pegs, an elder ebony tailpiece and ebony chinrest, a new bridge and new strings.
